Imperial Stormtroopers were originally called Clone Troopers as they were created as clones of Jango Fett. They were renamed after Emperor Palpatine declared the formation of the first Galactic Empire.
Back in the real world, the helmets were designed based on sketches by conceptual designer and futurist Ralph McQuarrie, who was respnsible for the look of the original trilogy of Star Wars films.
Amusingly their terrible aim has become known as the "Stormtrooper Effect" - a result of their apparent inability to hit any of the main characters in the films.
